The OD-1 needs no introduction - or explanation - surely? It's the birth of the box of drive and sounds just as good as in it's heyday. We've had to substitute the op-amp and diodes as the originals are long since obsolete, but there's nothing magical about them.
If you want a little more control than your Gain and Vol pots, you can go for the boutique FullTilter build, which adds toggle switches for Edge (treble boost) and Bottom (bass boost). There's no downside, so go for it.
Supplied with board-mounted pots with round shafts, so you'll need set-screw fitting knobs).
